This is actually a 17' Sportsman. The boat is the same hull as the "Ski Boat" and the only portions of this impeccable restoration that are not to 1959 specifications are;
1. The windshield is not the original plexiglas, I went with a sleek, beautiful and functional glass with chromed hardware. The original could be reinstalled. 2. I added a crash pad (bump rail) all around the interior for safety, looks and usability. This could be removed. 3. A white planked vinyl floor instead of the brown planked vinyl. The white looks crisp and sharp. The brown just looked...brown. The brown could be installed.
A restoration is only as good as its bottom/hull. The bottom planking is screwed and secured with 3M 5200 rubber. Then 3 coats of barrier coat and finished off with a Pettit’s Hard Racing Copper Bronze. This is how it should be done. Epoxy bottoms WILL fail. With normal, not that difficult, routine maintenance this bottom will last longer than the owner. The entire boat is built out of African Kaya Ivorensis mahogany, book matched for consistency from one side of the boat to the other. Kaya is what they used in 1959 but the book matched is special. The varnish is brushed on and tipped for a smooth, deep, high gloss finish. The hardware was re-chromed and the stock chrome fitted where it belongs. The upholstery was restored as close to original as possible. As I mentioned in 2 and 3 above, I added a crash pad around the interior for safety and usability and installed the white instead of the brown flooring material. The original engine is totally rebuilt with less than 5 hrs. I had Lee’s Marine in the Logan area do the work. I had them change the standard head gasket for a slight boost in compression and a ¾ race cam to increase the HP from the stock 185 to about 250-275.
